Professor of Sociology & Director, Office of Community Outreach University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown
Description of the Network
The Civic Action Network (CAN) is a regional community network designed to link people and community information together through computer technology and social interaction. The network serves Cambria County Pennsylvania by reducing the high degree of information and resource fragmentation and other barriers to progress that have characterized the region. This community network links citizens with resources and information that will support individual growth, civic participation, as well as the economic and social development of the region.  While the network has opened first in Cambria County, it is being designed to grow to serve a 10 county region of southwest central Pennsylvania in the future.  This public network is free and is accessible through anycomputer linked to the Internet (including at home, in the office, at school, in libraries, in senior citizen and community centers, and at two CAN Community Responsibility Centers). The network leverages community resources (including businesses, schools, government, neighborhoods, and individuals) in order to facilitate individual growth, community and economic development, and other positive social change via computer technology and social interaction.

Thanks for the invitation to join build-com. On Dec 2 we had a special election for an at-large city council seat. It was held just after the Thanksgiving weekend and few folks knew about it. For a variety of reasons, I decided to try a three-day online voter ed/GOTV campaign for about 1200 of my "nearest & dearest" DC residents. I had amazingly good results.

Now I want to expand to focus on two ballot initiatives we'll have up for a vote next Nov.: medical marijuana & riverboat gambling as well as a local political campaign in Adams Morgan & the rest of Ward One to unseat a city council
person who hasn't done anything useful for years.

I've just been feeling my way along with all of this so I'll look forward to learning what approaches others are taking to community building.
