I'm Pres Eaton, President of The Federation of Forsyth County Homeowners. We are an association of Homeowners Associations, Neighborhood Groups and
Individuals. We began to see the need for the voice of the Forsyth County (about 40 minutes NE of Atlanta, Georgia, USA) Homeowner to be heard, in the summer of 1994 we drafted a Statement of Purpose, to wit: 1.
The voice of the homeowner needs to be heard by the local government, 2. The local government can use us as a sounding board on issues of concern to them and us,
3. We can help each other by sharing our success stories and problems, 4. We can band together on contracts of mutual interest such as landscaping, insurance, etc.

Regina Haynes I currently a Graduate Student at UNC Chapel Hill School of Social Work. My concentration area is with Families and Children. I am currently
completing my final field placement in a local school system in NC. We are working to develop community partnerships with schools to meet resource needs in the public system. This work is in ametropolitan area with
many corporations, and high incomes. However, there are quite a few areas that has extremely poor living conditions. My focus in this placement is to work with one particular fragile school and area to mobilize
resources in the neighborhood. I've also done a great deal of work in Child Protective Services in the pastI am also on task force with various community leaders to enhance entoring programs. I think this
group would be helpful to me for discussion of issues faced by others in this field. I plan to continue community type work when I graduate in May 1998.

> Main Activities of Group The Healthy Community Initiative of Greater Orlando (HCI) is a place where the Central Florida Community may pursue its collective dream to be the best place in the world to live.
HCI provides information, process, and facilitation to mobilize community builders to create and enhance assets in their neighborhoods, families, and businesses. HCI's approach recognizes that health, social and
public policy problems cross jurisdictional and organizational boundaries. More specifically, we conduct broad research (through surveys, focus groups and a wide array of community entities) and communication
(serving as a catalyst and facilitator) through effort in our four focus areas: CHILDREN AND FAMILIES: A Crusade for Children - making Central Florida the best place in the world to raise a family and be a
child; CONNECTEDNESS: Building community trusteeship through growing social capital; DIVERSITY: Promoting the acceptance, appreciation, and building of all members of our community; and CENTER FOR
TRUSTEESHIP: Establish a neutral community place for the free exchange of ideas.

We coordinate the Board of County Commissioners activities with neighborhood associations (over 400) county-wide.I am Kelly Carpenter, I am an urban planner by training and experience. I work for local government as
a Department Director for Environmental and Engineering Services. I live and work in a city that is about 40 years old in suburban south Florida, north of Miami about 25 miles. It has about 50,000 population more
than half black, maybe a third or more immigrants from Jamaica and Haiti. The rest includes old and very old in condominiums and other lower middle and middle class folks. The center of the city (and it is not a
city at all but suburban sprawl) is dying. And I am determined not to let it die. There is a community council just organized, and economic development board; about a thousand units of section 8 housing; many more
renters than owners. . I am looking for others experience , strength and hope...we are at a beginning, not an end. We have no high school; our kids go outside the city for high school. about half go outside for
middle school. We are in the midddle of an urban county of 1 .3 million people in the middle of the metropolis of about 4 million . A charter school is one of the things I lthink of. A commuity based credit union. A
multilingual public tech school tied to a corporation that would have jobs. We also need a grocery store....they all left the central part of the city.

the fewest resources. We have a physical presence in the neighborhhod as a long term service provider to the poor and the homeless and now find ourselves thrust in the middle of the largest "Welfare to
Work" response team in the area, mostly because since Jan 1997, our hot meal kitchen has gone from serving an averae of 245 meals a day to over 345 average for July. To date each month sees another increase.
Our homeless shelters in Lafayette have been full since June, and in the past ten years, they have NEVER been full in the summer months. We must develop a comprehensive plan of action to revitalize the community and
build up the people. We have been working to develop a working partnership with two other sevice providers that have been in the neighborhood and themselves own property and buildings to begin a dialogue with the
street leaders in the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Resource Center here in Nashville, Tennessee. We provide technical assistance to neighborhoods who want to get themselves organized on quality of life issues important to the neighbors (e.g. crime,
environment, etc.). I have designed a Leadership Institute curriculum which I use to talk to people about; how to organize, how to develop relationships with those in power, how to develop relationships with the
media and how to run effective meetings etc. etc. etc. It is a lot of fun and has been well received hereabouts. We also do community organizing by going out into the neighborhoods to determine people's
self-interests and how best they can accomplish their self-interests. Another component of our project is providing information to neighborhood organizations on what is going on in their neighborhoods. We have a
pretty sophisticated mapping program called ArcView which we are learning and will enable us to do some detailed analysis on the characteristics of various neighborhoods.
